Migration of TEXT to LONG

I am facing a new problem when using the migration workbench 1.2.2.2.0
against sql server 6.5 and WIth oracle server version 8.0.5.0.0
It was running fine previously but since i have made the following changes the jrew.exe gives a Dr Watson error and kills the migration process. I have tested this on different machines and used different SQL server databases and I have the same problem
These are the changes i made.
1. Changed the mapping from
TEXT to CLOB new mapping: TEXT to LONG
2. Removed everything from the captured schema except for tables as i only want to get the data from the SQL server. then mapped the source model which went fine
Could you give some pointers as to how to tackle this problem.
I would appreciate any help
thanks
Mandar
Hi,
Can you reply with the CREATE TABLE statement that you used in SQL Server.
This behaviour should not be happening. Are there any other big columns in that table e.g. image?
Thanks
John
Hi
I am working with Mandar on this one.
This are the DDL for the tables in SQL Server. The third column "alert text" is the problematic one:
CREATE TABLE dbo.table_alert
(
objid int NOT NULL,
type varchar(80) NOT NULL,
alert_text text NULL,
start_date datetime NOT NULL,
end_date datetime NOT NULL,
active tinyint NOT NULL,
title varchar(80) NOT NULL,
hot tinyint NOT NULL,
last_update2user int NULL,
alert2contact int NULL,
alert2site int NULL,
alert2contract int NULL,
dev int NULL,
alert2bus_org int NULL,
alert2lead int NULL,
alert2opportunity int NULL
)

Hello,

I've got a problem in executing the UTL_FILE package. The output is not dumped into ascii file which i have specified in the parameters .Can u pls send me any example on emp tbl.
where in the data is dumped into an ASCII file. Upload the data of emp tbl from an ASCII file to Oracle database.
pls help me in solving it out. I need to upload and download the data to-n-from Oracle database.
The data is downloaded in the ASCII format, Well if it is to Upload then it has to extracted from such ASCII files. Presently im using UTL_FILE package. I wrote a script on extract, but havent got the output in the .TXT File. I didnt try on upload can u pls let me know the procedure.
Thanking u in advance.

Hi Mandar,
I have sent you a reply by e-mail.
This is in fact a bug. We will work on fixing it in the next release.
Basically, Oracle recommends the use of CLOBs instead of LONGs and that is why we have CLOB as default.
The workaround to your problem is to load the data using SQL Loader in conjunction with BCP. There is a menu option in the Oracle Model UI of the Migration Workbench 'Generate SQL Loader Scripts..' that will generate the SQL Loader and BCP scipts for you.

Hi vankat,
Make sure that u have included the output file generating directory(mentioned in UTL_FILE.OPEN commnd) in the init.ora file of the respective database. Also give the extn. of file as '.txt', if u want to use this for uploading with UTL_FILE. Or u can use these file using SQLLOADER.
bye,
Able

I am using 1.2.5.0.0 of the migration workbench tool. I too am having problems migrating text fields to long fields. The workbench gets invalid memory errors. When I migrate to clob it works OK.
I looked for the option you mentioned in the oracle model UI to create sqlloader and bcp scripts and I cannot find it. Has that option been removed in this version. If so, is there any other workaround for me to get my data over to long fields from sqlserver text fields?

load data from exil file to oracle

Hello Every Body.
I am working in oracle 10g, O.S Window xp
i load the data from flat file to oracle using
LOAD DATA
INFILE 'C:\LOADER\MYDATA.DAT'
TRUNCATE
INTO TABLE RESTURANT
FIELDS TERMINATED BY ","
(name, address, city, type, num)its working properly, now i want to load data from exil to oracle, so please guide me or send me the complete procedure.
Thanks.
Regards
check this
http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_load_excel_spreadsheet_into_oracle_table.htm
Thanks sir,
But link is not working properly.
Save your Excel sheet in CSV format and then use external table or SQLLOADER to load it in Oracle database.
regards
But when we save Excel file in CSV format then it display message that it contain the feature that are not compatiable with csv. AND I WANT TO USE SQLLOADER to load DATA in Oracle database.
That message from Excel is ok to ignore. Save your file as CSV which is comma separated values file, and then use sqlloader. It shouldnt cause you any problem.
regards
ok thanks.
i will check it out. but in case of SQL LOADER what should i do.
For example of sqlloader, check this:
http://www.orafaq.com/wiki/SQL*Loader_FAQ

how to convert text file to xls file

anyone knows how to convert text file to xls file?
i have text file like this example.
username created object_count
abc 04-01-2011 29
aef 04-02-2011 20
how do I convert it to xls file with three columns?
thanks a lot.
You can do it in 2 steps:
1- Load the text file into an Oracle table using External tables or Sql Loader
2- Create an Excel file using PL/SQL, you can refer to this post: http://akdora.wordpress.com/2009/02/06/how-to-write-excel-via-plsql-and-save-the-file-to-a-directory/
Good luck!
thanks for the reply.
the file will be generated by an automatic shell script, i was kind hope to modify that script to get this.
the file will be generated by an automatic shell script, i was kind hope to modify that script to get this.The problem and solution have 100% NOTHING to do with Oracle RDBMS!
I suggest you find a MicroSoft/Excel forum to pursue any solution.

Load data from excel

How can i load data from excel to database tables. I am using forms 6i to develop client/server application. If anybody can share the code.
Hi!
The easiest and shortest way which i often do, generate a script from excel and run it in sql plus or toad. generate a script mean generate insert command from excel.
reg
Actually I have a report in a specific format in excel and i want to load the data for report into database.
Well could write a custom datasource that reads the excel-file directly using Apache POI or something but regardless of how you do it you have to map the excel data to a relational model somewhere along the way.
I want to do in client server application.
If the excel sheet is at the client machine then u can use
TEXT_IO from forms6i .
Yes the Excel file is at client machine. Can please explain it a bit more.
u can use the below
Declare
file1 Text_io.file_type;
z varchar2(2000);
Begin
file1 := text_io.fopen(<Directory>,<filename>,'r');
text_io.get_line(file1,z);
loop
<Normal processing>
end loop;
text_io.fclose(file1);
exception
when no_data_found then
text_io.fclose(file1);
end;
Hi!
R u sure if text_io will work for excel files
reg
hi! my suggestion is convert the excel file into a formatted text (space delimited), just click save as on excel and on save as type select formatted text(space delimited), then use text_io to load into the database.
regards.
This code works only for text file.
I want to load it from Excel file.
Hi!
sorry, first i though that u want to load data for general purpose.
tell me how client open excel file from his machine?
from any form or report? or these are just independent files?
reg
Actually users are maintaining reports in excel files. We want to load the data of these excel files into Oracle Tables using Forms 6i. Is there any way?
H!
have u try DDE package. it is possible using DDE and simple 2.
